Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition whereby the male prostate slowly enlarges. This is a process that naturally occurs in men as they age but, can become a problem once the prostate reaches a size whereby it pushes against the urethral canal causing partial (and in some cases complete) obstruction of the urethra. These conditions can cause varying degrees of pain and discomfort.
Early BHP Symptoms Include:
- Frequently needing to urinate, particularly at night
- Difficulty urinating or Inability to pass urine while standing
- Leakage of urine whilst coughing or laughing
- A burning sensation while urination or ejaculation
It is estimated that 50% of men over the age of 40 and 80% of men over the age of 60 suffer from some form of prostate disease. The most common is Benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is the natural growth of the prostate as a man ages
Incedence of Prostate Disease in Men with Age
Medical professionals usually advise lifestyle adjustments to help men live with the effects of an enlarged prostate (unless symptoms are severe) because surgery and other invasive treatments can often result in unwanted side effects.
Natures Bio-Active Ingredients
Providing Relief to the Symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Fortunately, there is a growing body of research that supports the use of natural ingredients to help prevent and relieve the symptoms of Benign prostatic hyperplasia. These ingredients and their effects are briefly discussed below:
Saw Palmetto
Is a popular herbal supplements that contains Beta-Sisterol; a plant sterol. Supplementation with Saw Palmetto has been shown in a number of studies to help improve urinary symptoms in men with prostate enlargement.. Saw Palmetto helps by contributing to correct regulation of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a compound suggested to play a key role in prostate enlargement.
Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)
Is a strong inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase acyivity. An enzyme that irreversibly converts testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), This conversion may not only result in prostate enlargement but can cause other problems related to low testosterone such as fatigue, reduced virility and male pattern baldness.
Blackcurrant Anthocyanins
Possess powerful antioxidant activity which fight oxidative stress helping prevent disease and reduce premature aging. In addition the unique composition of anthocyanins, rarely found elsewhere in nature, also promotes peripheral blood circulation that can help alleviate urinary tract infections.
Zinc
Plays an important role in maintaining prostate health. In a diseased prostate, zinc levels fall to one tenth of the levels found in normal prostates. Zinc supplementation has a clearly documented usefulness in shrinking an enlarged prostate.
Lycopene
Is a strong antioxidant that combats toxic free radicals protecting critical cells and bio molecules including lipids, DNA and proteins. When absorbed from the stomach, lycopene is transported in the blood and accumulates in the liver, adrenal glands, testes and prostate gland – Meaning its antioxidant power will be most active in these areas helping to prevent disease (like prostate disease).
